My Favorite Stone and Natural Pathways.
Garden paths add so much to your back yard space. They take you from place to place in the garden, and if used properly can also add a bit of mystery to your outdoor space. There are so many materials to use for your garden paths. Some are very rustic and natural (my favorite!) and others are more structured.
My test garden is about three years from being finished but I it will have a path to my back yard shed when it is done. The idea for the test garden came from a recent issue of Garden Gate magazine. My garden won’t be exactly like this but the flagstone path will likely be very similar.
I have a fondness for natural looking garden paths. No hardscaping for me in structured shapes. The more rustic the better!
Since the test garden still has a ways to go, I am also on the lookout for other interesting paths that could be incorporated into the garden. Here are some of my favorites. Just click on any of the images to go to the original source.
This idea is one that I want on the edge of my test boarder. I’d love to have a grass path between two large flower borders.
My garden seems to lean towards a cottage garden effect. This stone way would fit right in.
Well, since I do not have a forest in my back yard, this might be a stretch but how beautiful it is!
Hmmm…my pathway will curve and start at the deck. This one might work!
I’m unlikely to have this one but I love the rustic look and flower focal point in it!

Love the rock borders but what is the best way to deal with weeds without always having to move rocks to weed?
Hi Christine. If you don’t want to use chemicals, both white vinegar or boiling water will deal with weeds in this type of situation. They will come back but it’s still easy to do.

I use the plastic bags milk comes in. I cut them in half lengthwise and they are my base. They do not decompose.
I am thinking about taking out my landscape edging and using only rock to edge my landscape .Should I leave that border in place ? or take it out completely?
Hi JoAnn. It could be done either way but without the edging inside the rocks, it is possible that some grass could creep into the border. Carol
